Instrument Signals

  

Many bands in the RoR network don't use instrument signals, relying instead on the mestre pointing to the groups of instruments they are referring to. However it's worth knowing these just in case, as they can crop up, especially if you're out with a big band at a demo.

  

Agogos hand signal

Agogos

 

Agogos are signalled by alternately touching the thumb and first finger.

 

Tam hand signal

Tams

 

Tams are signalled by placing 2 fingers on the palm of the other hand.

 

Surdo hand signal

Surdos

 

Surdos are signalled by alternating fists, as if beating a drum above your head.

Snare hand signal

Snares (Caixa)

 

Snares are signalled using the index fingers of both hands to imitate playing a snare

Repenique hand signal

Repenique

 

Repeniques are signalled by holding up one hand with forefinger and little finger extended.

Sjaker hand signal

Shaker (e.g. ganza or chocalho)

 

Shakers are signalled using both hands to imitate holding the instrument.
