Nova Balanca (Tune signal: both fists on chest, then arms opened out wide)
Notes:
The surdo rhythm is a little tricky to get right. It is very easy to speed up whilst playing it with the mid part being played on the off beat. For both the low and high surdos, the second notes come slightly later than you think (i.e. just before the beat). Take your time to get it right. It has a fantastic swing to it.
You might recognise some of the parts. The agogo part is identical to the agogo part in Kalashnikov. The tam part mirrors this rhythm.
The repenique and snare parts are identical, just played 2 beats apart with the single notes on beats 2 and 4 complementing each other. Tricky but sounds fab when you nail it!
Break 1 should be played from soft to really, really loud!!! Try not to speed up whilst you're playing it.
Why not try stopping everyone except the surdos. When your audience is swinging, bring in your snares and shakers over the top.
